We’re following about 330 open civils, path and drainage jobs across the South East, and a quarter are collecting quotes now.

What we find

The civils work
we’re following.

About three quarters of these jobs come from parish and town councils, with district councils and unitaries making up most of the rest.

Where a figure has been published, about four in ten are under £25,000. Some are small repairs and others are part of a much bigger scheme.

Open projects in the counties we cover, November 2026. A picture of now, not a promise of future volume.

  • Car parks and access roadsResurfacing, new entrances and roadways into playing fields and halls.
  • Paths and footwaysNew path networks, repairs and all-weather surfaces on open spaces.
  • DrainageSoakaways, silt removal, new drain runs and wet pitches.
  • Banks and retaining wallsTimber sleepers, riverbank work and retaining structures.
  • Groundworks in bigger schemesThe civils inside a new pavilion, sports ground or play area.

See what’s in each lead

Councils own more than you might think

Recreation grounds, cemeteries, allotments and village car parks all need paths, drainage and surfacing, and those are for the parish to fix, not the highway authority.

Drainage often starts with a problem

A flooded pitch or a failed soakaway tends to bring in a contractor or a survey first. The firm that helps work out the problem is well placed to quote for the fix.

Part of something bigger

Groundworks often sit inside a larger project. When they do, the lead shows the whole scheme, so you can decide whether to approach the buyer or wait for a main contractor.

you might ask.

More in our general questions, or email
hello@beforetender.co.uk

Do you cover highways contracts?

Mostly not. These are smaller jobs on land that councils, churches and clubs look after, and they’re often bought on a few quotes.

Will a job show up if it’s only part of a project?

Yes. If a pavilion or sports ground scheme includes drainage or surfacing, it comes to you with that noted.

Can you keep it to my area?

Yes. Tell us where you work and how far you’ll travel, and we’ll keep to it.
